Redox is electron bookkeeping. Assign oxidation numbers, see which ones moved, and you have found what was oxidized and what was reduced. Losing electrons is oxidation, gaining is reduction.
Half-reactions keep it honest. Balance atoms first, then charge with electrons, then scale both halves so the electrons cancel exactly. If they do not cancel, something upstream is wrong.
