AP Physics 2
9.6 Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics
9.4 The First Law of Thermodynamics
A sample of \(n\) moles of an ideal gas is initially at temperature \(T_0\) and volume \(V_0\). The gas first undergoes an irreversible free expansion into an evacuated, thermally insulated container to a final volume of \(2V_0\). The gas is then compressed back to its original volume \(V_0\) along a quasi-static isothermal path at temperature \(T_0\). What are the net work done on the gas \(W_{\text{net}}\) and the net change in entropy of the universe \(\Delta S_{\text{univ}}\) for the complete two-step process?
