13.4 Images Formed by Lenses
AdvancedMCQMathematicalConceptual16.7k
A horizontal dashed line represents a principal axis. A thin converging lens, represented by a vertical line with outward-pointing arrows at both ends, is positioned vertically at the center, labeled L_1. A second thin converging lens with identical outward-pointing arrowheads is placed directly adjacent and touching L_1 on its right side, labeled L_2. To the left of L_1, an upright solid arrow representing an object stands on the principal axis at a distance labeled 3f. No other labels, lines, text, or axes appear.
Composite lens system with object distance 3f.
A single thin converging lens has focal length \(f\). An object is placed at a distance \(d_o = 3f\) to the left of the lens, forming a real image on the right side of the lens. A second thin converging lens with focal length \(f_0\) is then placed in direct, seamless contact with the first lens. With the object kept at the same position, the distance of the new real image from the combined lens system is half the original image distance. What is the focal length \(f_0\) of the second lens in terms of \(f\)?
