Tutor Terms
Last updated: September 8, 2026 · Version 2026-09-v1
These terms are for tutors who teach on the Nerd Notes marketplace as independent contractors. They cover how you are listed, how students book you, how lesson outcomes are recorded, how you are paid, and what we expect of you with students. They apply to you as a tutor.
They are separate from the Terms of Use and the Sales and Refunds policy, which govern students buying and booking on Nerd Notes. What a student is entitled to is set there; what you earn and owe is set here.
You accept these terms in your tutor dashboard before your calendar goes live. We record which version you accepted and when.
1. Becoming a Tutor
You apply, and Nerd Notes decides whether to approve you. We may decline an application, and we may pause or remove a tutor as described in section 8.
To be listed and bookable you need all of the following:
- An approved tutor account and a public handle.
- A connected Google Calendar, which we use to read your busy times and write lessons.
- A meeting link where lessons take place.
- A tier and an hourly price (section 2).
Your profile must be accurate: your name, subjects, and credentials. You must be 18 or older.
2. Your Price and Our Fee
You set your own hourly price within the range for your tier. Tiers are set by Nerd Notes, guided by hours taught on the platform:
| Tier | Hourly price | Platform fee |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | $25 – $49 | 22% |
| Tier 2 | $50 – $99 | 20% |
| Tier 3 | $100 and up | 16% |
- The fee applied to a lesson is the one for your tier at the moment the lesson's outcome is recorded, and it is frozen on that lesson from then on.
- A price change applies to future purchases. Hours a student already bought keep the price they paid.
- Students buy hours for you specifically. Nerd Notes runs the checkout and handles refunds and payment disputes.
- We may change the fee rates or the tier ranges. Every tutor gets at least 30 days' notice by email and in the dashboard before a change takes effect, and lessons recorded before that date keep the old fee.
3. Your Calendar and Bookings
- Students book from the availability you publish. Keep it accurate, and honor every lesson that is booked.
- Be at your meeting link on time and stay for the full scheduled duration.
- To cancel a lesson, use your dashboard. The student gets their hours back with a fresh 60-day booking window and is notified automatically. You are not paid for a lesson you cancel.
- Missed lessons are taken seriously. Three missed lessons, whether you report them yourself or we find them, result in removal from the marketplace (section 8). Repeated or late cancellations may lead to a pause.
4. Recording Lesson Outcomes
After each lesson you tell us what happened. This decides your pay and the student's hours, and it runs on your word. That trust is a condition of teaching here.
| You record | Student's hours | Your pay |
|---|---|---|
| Lesson happened | used | paid |
| Student didn't show | used | paid |
| I didn't show | returned with a fresh 60-day window | not paid |
Rules:
- Record Lesson happened only if the lesson took place.
- Record Student didn't show only if you were present at the meeting link for the scheduled time and the student did not join. The student is told, and their hours count as used.
- If you missed the lesson, record I didn't show. You are not paid, the student is made whole, and honesty here is never held against you the way a false report is.
- A lesson you leave unrecorded is recorded as Lesson happened 72 hours after its scheduled end.
- Nerd Notes may verify outcomes, using attendance records where available and student reports, and may change an outcome. A knowingly false report is a breach of these terms: the affected pay is reversed or withheld, and you may be removed from the marketplace.
5. Getting Paid
- Your pay for a lesson is its hours multiplied by the price the student paid, minus the platform fee for your tier.
- A lesson becomes payable when its outcome is recorded, by you or automatically after 72 hours.
- Payouts are made on a regular schedule, weekly as our target, through Stripe Connect once you have completed its onboarding, or by direct transfer before then. You must provide accurate payout details.
- A completed lesson stays paid even if the student later obtains a refund or disputes the charge. That cost is ours, not yours, unless the outcome you recorded was false.
- You are not paid for lessons you cancel or miss, or for lessons a student cancelled in time.
- If an outcome on a lesson you were already paid for is changed, the difference is netted against your next payout.
6. Students, Conduct, and Safety
- Many students are minors. Behave professionally at all times.
- Nerd Notes does not have its own messaging yet, so you may communicate with students off the platform, by email or text, for lesson logistics and teaching only. We never share a student's contact details with you; a student or parent may share them with you directly.
- Never arrange, request, or accept payment for tutoring outside the platform.
- Do not move students off the platform. You may not offer or accept paid tutoring outside Nerd Notes with a student you met through Nerd Notes, for 12 months after your last lesson with them.
- Use student information only to deliver lessons, and keep it confidential.
- Where Nerd Notes provides the meeting room, lessons may be recorded and transcribed to produce lesson summaries for the student. By teaching in that room you consent to this.
7. Your Relationship With Us
You teach as an independent tutor. These terms do not make you an employee, agent, partner, or joint venturer of Nerd Notes, and they do not give you authority to make commitments on our behalf.
You are responsible for your own taxes. Tutors in the United States may receive a Form 1099 for the year's payouts, and you agree to provide the tax information we need to issue it.
8. Pausing, Leaving, and Removal
- You may pause your availability or leave the marketplace at any time. Lessons already booked must be honored or cancelled through your dashboard (section 3).
- We may suspend or remove a tutor at any time, at our discretion, for fraud, abuse, a false outcome report, moving students off the platform, three missed lessons, repeated cancellations, or conduct that puts students at risk.
- Pay for properly recorded lessons is still paid out after you leave or are removed. Pay tied to a false report is withheld.
9. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms. We will notify you through your dashboard or by email, and continuing to accept bookings after the notice is acceptance of the new version. We record the version you accepted and when.
10. General
The general provisions of our Terms of Use, governing law and jurisdiction, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and the class action waiver, also apply to your participation as a tutor. Where those terms and these terms differ on a tutor matter, these terms control.
11. Questions
Email support@nerd-notes.com with anything about your listing, an outcome, or a payout. Your lessons, outcomes, and earnings are always in your dashboard at nerd-notes.com/tutor/profile.
