AP Physics 2
15.5 The Photoelectric Effect
An experiment investigating the photoelectric effect is conducted using different monochromatic light sources and clean metal surfaces as summarized in the table. Monochromatic light of wavelength \(\lambda_0\) consists of photons each with energy \(E_0 = 3\Phi_0\), where \(\Phi_0\) is a reference work function. If no electrons are ejected during a trial, the maximum kinetic energy of ejected electrons is taken to be zero.
Which of the following correctly ranks the maximum kinetic energy \(K_{\text{max}}\) of the electrons ejected from the metal targets in the four trials?
| Trial | Incident Wavelength | Work Function |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | \(\lambda_0\) | \(\Phi_0\) |
| 2 | \(\dfrac{\lambda_0}{2}\) | \(4\Phi_0\) |
| 3 | \(\dfrac{\lambda_0}{3}\) | \(6\Phi_0\) |
| 4 | \(2\lambda_0\) | \(2\Phi_0\) |
Which of the following correctly ranks the maximum kinetic energy \(K_{\text{max}}\) of the electrons ejected from the metal targets in the four trials?
