A side-view physical setup. A rectangular block labeled 'M' sits on a horizontal surface. To the left of the block, a small bullet-shaped projectile labeled 'm' is pointing to the right. A right-pointing velocity arrow labeled 'v_0' is attached to the projectile. The surface beneath and to the right of the block has hash marks indicating it is rough, and is labeled with 'mu_k'.
Figure 1. A projectile fired toward a block on a rough surface.
A block of mass \( M \) is initially at rest on a horizontal table. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the table is \( \mu_k \). A projectile of mass \( m \) is fired horizontally at the block with an initial speed \( v_0 \). The projectile passes completely through the block and emerges from the right side with a final speed of \( \dfrac{v_0}{3} \). After the collision, the block slides a distance \( D \) across the table before coming to rest.
