A horizontal solid line representing a frictionless surface. On the left, a rectangular box with wheels is labeled 'Cart A, mass M'. A smaller square labeled 'Block B, mass m' rests on the right edge of Cart A. A right-pointing arrow labeled 'v_0' is drawn above Cart A. On the right side of the surface, a larger rectangular box with wheels is labeled 'Cart C, mass 3M'. Cart C is stationary, with no arrows above it.
Figure 1. Initial state before block B is launched.
Cart A of mass \(M\) is carrying a small block B of mass \(m\). They move together to the right along a horizontal, frictionless surface with an initial speed \(v_0\). A spring mechanism inside Cart A is triggered, launching block B to the right. After the launch, Cart A continues to the right with a reduced speed \(v_A\) (where \(v_A < v_0\)). Block B travels to the right and collides perfectly inelastically with a stationary Cart C of mass \(3M\).
