A tall vertical cylinder filled with water resting on a horizontal table. A small hole is on the right side of the cylinder. A dashed horizontal line indicates the water surface. A dimension arrow labeled '\(h\)' points from the water surface down to the hole. A dimension arrow labeled '\(H\)' points from the hole down to the floor. A curved parabolic path shows water shooting horizontally out of the hole and landing on the floor. A horizontal dimension arrow labeled '\(x\)' points from the base of the table edge to the point where the water lands.
Figure 1. Water flowing from a tank on a table.
A student is investigating the flow of water from a tall, transparent cylindrical tank of cross-sectional area \(A_T\) that is open to the atmosphere. The tank is placed on a laboratory table. Several small circular holes, each of area \(A_h\) (where \(A_h \ll A_T\)), are punched in the side of the tank at different heights. All holes are initially sealed with tape. When the tape is removed from a hole, water exits horizontally. The hole being tested is a depth \(h\) below the water surface and a height \(H\) above the floor. When water exits the hole, it lands a horizontal distance \(x\) from the edge of the table (directly below the hole). The water level in the tank drops very slowly and can be assumed constant during a short measurement.
