A mechanism is the reaction broken into single collisions. Two tests: the steps have to add up to the overall equation, and the slow step has to predict the rate law you measured in the lab.
Intermediates get made then used up. Catalysts go in first and come back out, lowering the activation energy by opening a cheaper path. Neither changes where equilibrium ends up, only how fast you get there.
