In orbit, a spaceship and its occupants are in a state of continuous free fall towards Earth. They are moving forward at such a speed that, although they are being pulled towards Earth by gravity, they are also moving sideways fast enough to miss the Earth. This creates a stable orbit. Inside the spaceship, astronauts don’t feel their weight because both they and the spaceship are accelerating towards Earth at the same rate, effectively cancelling out the force of gravity that we feel as weight on the surface. This is why astronauts experience weightlessness.
